Thank You for a Great Sixteen Years

The Pioneer III has been sold and we will no longer be taking fishing charters from Liberty Park. I will be helping Capt. Steve and first mate Tim aboard the Skylarker out of Belmar  this season. I hope to see all my old friends aboard and put them on some good fishing. As for the Pioneer, I would like to thank everyone that sailed aboard and making it a success.

Sunday

Had a pretty large crew, Saltwater Anglers of Bergen County, on the Skylarker today. Fishing was spotty on a disturbed ocean, but the bite turned on late in the day as the sea calmed. Plenty of short action and enough keeper blackfish for a few dinners.

Happy Easter

We made our first trip of the spring season aboard the Skylarker and were happy to see the blackfish biting. A week ago, things seemed dismal on the fishing front, but the recent mild weather started the spring inshore fishing. Although the water is still cold everyone managed a few tog and even some black sea bass. I had five keeper tog and a dozen shorts. Capt. Howard of the Sea Hunter won the pool with a nine pound blackfish. The season for blackfish remains open for the month of April and we will be back at it soon.

Trout Fishing

One of the most rewarding feats in fishing is finding new productive fishing spots. One of the most frustrating is scouting for new spots and finding good looking water and catching nothing. I worked over some holes on the Toms River the other morning and couldn't buy a bite. When the strike indicator finally went under, I was so surprised, I missed the bite. The next day, I headed to my local pickerel spots thinking they would be more active after the recent warm spell and covered a lot of ground for just a couple of dinks. I hope the ocean fishing is better.

Spring is in the Air

It's cold, cloudy and raining every other day, so it must be spring. The temperatures are forecast to soar into the seventies this week and it all should begin. We will start the season on the Skylarker Saturday, 4/15 and there are spots available. Blackfish are starting to wake up.

Spring Blackfish

The old timers used to say, "When the dogwoods bloom, the blackfish bite". We have a dogwood in the backyard and it looks like it will not bloom until July.
